MenHealing is excited to announce the launch of our Peer Support Groups initiative.

Connection with other male survivors can make a huge difference in one’s journey. In the past, the ability to connect with other male survivors has largely depended on the person’s location and the availability of therapists and/or groups in their areas. The resources offered here strive to remove some of those barriers, bringing peer support to anyone interested, regardless of location or availability.

The use of the term “male” includes all cisgender and trans individuals who are masculine-identifying or self-identify as male. All sexual orientations are welcome.

To that end, below are three different types of peer support available to male survivors:

MenHealing Alumni Peer Support Groups

Those who have attended a Weekend of Recovery (WOR) or Day of Recovery (DOR) are eligible to register for peer-led support groups. These support groups generally run via Zoom every other week for 15-16 sessions.

The groups are facilitated by peers of the male survivor community who have received training conducted by licensed practitioners in mental health. Many of the peer leaders also received specialized training from doctors at Yale School of Medicine – Department of Psychiatry for a study that was conducted over the course of three years.

The peer leaders are required to attend bi-weekly supervision meetings overseen by a licensed mental health clinician. The supervision is meant to support the peer leaders as they support the group attendees.

As the sessions come to an end, each group will be given the option to continue to run independently without the peer leaders.

To attend the alumni support groups, we request a one-time suggested donation of $50 to cover administrative and staff fees. However, we do not want cost to be a barrier for anyone to attend. We have a “pay what you can” policy.

Registration for Alumni Support Groups Will Open in Mid 2023

Peer Support Groups for THE General Population

If you have not attended a WOR/DOR, you are eligible to sign up for one of our general peer-led support groups. To be eligible to join the general peer support groups, you must meet the following requirements:

  1. Self-Identify as Male / Masculine-Identifying
  2. Have experienced an unwanted sexual situation, assault, childhood sexual abuse, rape, or been the victim of any other undesired sexual perpetration
  3. Currently in, or has attended some form of trauma therapy in the past, whether individual, group, or both

The general support groups will run weekly for 6-8 weeks total and will follow a curriculum similar to the content used during the Yale Connect Study.

Our goal is to provide support for those who may feel disconnected or do not know how to start looking for additional help. As the sessions come to an end, we will provide materials to help each attendee as they look forward to future healing.

Starting Your Own Peer Support Group

We are working on a resource page dedicated to helping male survivors start their own local support groups. When finished, this page will include downloadable copies of forms to help the groups maintain safety and confidentiality. Keep an eye on this page or sign up for our Newsletter to be in the loop.
