    Board of Directors

I am delighted to announce the addition of a new member for the MenHealing Board:

Dr. Uma Dorn is a faculty member within the Counseling and Psychology program at the University of Utah as well as maintaining a small private practice. She has extensive clinical experience working with children and families to heal from trauma resulting from child maltreatment.

In addition to serving on the Board, Dr. Dorn will assume the role of Director for the new MenHealing Research Project.

For more pictures and information about the full Board, visit MenHealing.org

    Research Project

Initial planning has begun to implement an official Research Project to document the effectiveness of the Weekend of Recovery program.  Although 69 WORs/DORs have been conducted between 2001 and 2017, we have never included a formal research component to our program. Therefore, we are excited to move forward with the design of a formal research project to document our work.

The aims of this research project are to: (1) study the effectiveness of the three-day Weekend of Recovery (WOR) and single Day of Recovery (DOR) retreats; 2) apply research findings for program improvement for WOR’s and DOR’s; (3)  apply findings to broaden outreach and understand program needs for the inclusion of diverse populations; and (4) more effectively train clinicians across the nation to treat male-identified survivors.

Dr. Uma Dorn is the Research Project Director. We have submitted a grant to seek funding to hire a clinical graduate student to provide additional staff support for this project.

    Day of Recovery Expansion

The Boston Area Rape Crisis Center (BARCC) has recently been granted funding from the MA Office of Victim Assistance to contract with MenHealing to conduct Day of Recovery events for male-identified survivors of sexual trauma. This grant will provide funding for two DOR events for each of the next two program years (July 2018 – June 2019), with possible extension for an additional two more years. The DORs will offer free access to male-identified survivors who are residents of Massachusetts. Plans are already underway to determine dates and locations for these healing events.

    Social Media Outreach

A special “Thank You” to WOR Alumnus, Jordan Marciangelo – who is enhancing the presence of MenHealing on the social networking platforms of FaceBook, Twitter, and Instagram.

We are requesting that WOR Alumni, as well as friends and supporters of MenHealing, submit materials that can be used for social media outreach announcements:  testimonials, pictures, updates about projects and accomplishments, etc. We have already received a multitude of submissions and are wanting to have as much material as possible on file. This will allow us to maintain current and robust presence in the world of social media – thereby reaching more male survivors and allies.

Please send any submissions of materials to Jim Struve:  jim@jimstruve.com

    Financial Update

We are pleased to announce that the Internal Revenue Service has granted MenHealing official determination as a 501(c)3 tax exempt organization. This allows financial contributions to MenHealing to qualify as tax exempt charitable gifts.

In response to this ruling, an anonymous donor has contributed a $3,000 gift to the WOR Scholarship Fund.

In addition, Niall Lenihan - WOR Alumnus and long-time friend and supporter - has pledged a generous recurring monthly financial contribution.

We invite other alumni, friends, and supporters to consider ways you may be able to offer financial support either as one-time gifts or recurring sustainer gifts. Our success depends upon your support.

    Board Update

The MenHealing Board convened their inaugural meeting on March 23rd. The Board is a highly-qualified, energetic, and committed group of individuals.  We are very fortunate to have each member of this 6-member Board available to provide leadership and oversight.

We are reviewing the addition of a 7th member to the Board and hope to announce this news in the next MenHealing announcement.

    Research Project

For many years, we have been discussing the need for a research component to our program so we can document the success of the Weekends of Recovery retreats. We have a wealth of information that could provide the basis to demonstrate how and why our program impacts the male survivors who participate in our WORs. We have never lost sight of advocating for this important project need. We are excited to announce that we have finally been successful in finding a way to undertake this project.

We are excited to announce that Dr. Uma Dorn, Faculty Member in the Counseling and Psychology Department at the University of Utah has agreed to assume leadership for a WOR Research Project. This will allow us to design and implement an official IRB-approved research project to monitor the program and protocols of the WORs. One aspect of this planned Research Project is for a retrospective review of a sample of past end-of-weekend evaluations and 30-day post-weekend Survey Monkeys. The second aspect of this Research Project is to design pre- and post-weekend questions so we can more accurately measure the impact of our WORs. The third aspect of this Research Project is to establish a process for post-weekend interviews with alumni to gather qualitative feedback.

Plans are underway to launch this Research Project soon, thereby allowing us to begin gathering information this spring and to incorporate the research into all of our 2018 WORs.

We are searching for funding to allow us also to hire a part-time clinical graduate student for this project.

    Announcing our MenHealing Logo

I want to call your attention to our new MenHealing logo. We are appreciative to the efforts of Facilitator Team member Ernesto Mujica for his creativity in crafting this logo design. After much discussion among the WOR Facilitator Team, there is consensus about moving forward with this design to add a powerful visual image to our identity.

This narrative from Ernesto offers further context about our new logo:

I’ve used the Enso drawing to indicate the process of creative presence that is incomplete.  The colors refer to earth, nature, water, sky, and sun energies.   The MH which is joined refers to the fact that we lean on and impinge on one another in order to grow and heal.

2018 Weekends of Recovery to Open for Registration

Hope Springs Level One WOR registration is open. This weekend will be conducted on July 6th – 8th.  You should have received an outreach announcement yesterday. Please forward information about this WOR to others in your network to help us spread this information far and wide.

     WOR Facilitators in the News

Jim Struve will be the featured presenter in an up-coming Webinar being conducted by the US Office of Justice: Office of Victims of Crime. The 1 hour live webinar – “Assisting Male Victims of Domestic Violence and Sexual Abuse” – will be conducted on Wednesday, March 21st and will be available to a national audience. The session is currently filled to capacity.

    Financial Update

Thanks to everyone who has made financial donations to MenHealing so far in 2018.

We have recently received a generous contribution that will subsidize all the scholarship grants for the Hope Springs WOR.

We have also received several pledges for recurring financial donations from supporters/alumni who want to be regular and on-going sustainers – financial gifts that are pledged for monthly donations.

Please consider whether you are able to contribute financially to support our work. We especially want to extend an invitation for as many of you as possible to join our sustainer community of financial donors.

Your gift of financial support – in whatever amount – will be especially important during this time of our growth.

Thanks again to everyone for your loyalty and support for our work.

Weekend of Recovery (WOR) retreats provide complementary support for any male-identified individual – 18 or older – who is a survivor of sexual trauma as a child and/or as an adult. By engaging participants in creating an environment that supports safety needs for male-identified survivors, our program format seeks to acknowledge and honor the authentic diversities of attendees at each WOR (sexuality, gender, racial, ethnic, class, spirituality, etc.). Alumni of WOR retreats report the experience contributed to easing their suffering; to enabling higher functioning; to facilitating  healthier relationships with friends, partners, children; to inspiring activism; and to diminishing the cycle of victimization.

During the Weekend of Recovery, you will have the opportunity to participate in a number of different types of activities. The Weekend of Recovery is structured to include sessions with the entire community of participants as well as small group sessions, where you can have more individual time to talk and share your feelings and observations.

The program is maintained by an experienced team of highly trained trauma clinicians. Since 2001 the WOR Facilitator Team has conducted 69 WORs throughout the US and Canada.

The Weekend of Recovery program will introduce you to a variety of approaches for managing emotions and life stressors, as well as promoting relaxation. Everyone will have opportunities to choose how to tell your story – through words, through art, through movement, and/or through music. We’ll also include time for rest and to enjoy the beautiful physical environments that are available at each of our Weekend of Recovery venues. A goal is for all participants to have a range of skills and experiences to take home with them.

Read about the experiences of other attendees and "Is This For Me?" on our website first, then register for one of our upcoming Weekends.

A limited number of scholarships are available. If you are in financial need, please  apply for a scholarship before registering for a WOR.

Please visit our website at menhealing.org to learn more about our organization and programs.

If you have any questions, please contact our event coordinator.

    Be well,

    Financial Updates

Securing financial support for our new MenHealing enterprise remains a critical area of attention.

Thanks again to everyone who has already made a financial contribution. If you have not yet contributed, please consider whether you can help – financial gifts in any amount are greatly appreciated.

We need to raise money to support (1) resources for a solid Scholarship Fund prior to opening registration for 2018 WORs and (2) program expenses for our new organization infrastructure – we are committed to maintaining the lowest possible administrative overhead, but we do have a minimal amount of costs to maintain our organizational operations.

We are now able to process “Sustainer” financial gifts – supporters who want to provide on-going financial support by pledging monthly, quarterly, or annual monetary contributions. This is now easy to activate at our website.

We are deeply grateful for any amount of financial support you can contribute.

Thanks again for your continued interest and support for our Weekend of Recovery activities. Please feel free to send your feedback and any ideas about our work via: contact@menhealing.org
