This Alumni Event will provide an opportunity for male survivors who have previously completed a Level 1 WOR to give back in service of healing for precious animals who call the Best Friends Animal Sanctuary their home between homes.

We are excited to offer a special Service Project/Hiking Alumni Weekend option for 2021.  This novel weekend will be conducted at Best Friends Animal Sanctuary located near Kanab, UT.  The nearest airports to Kanab are St. George, UT. = 1 ½ hour; Las Vegas, NV = 3 hours; or Salt Lake = 5 hours. Each participant will be provided a link to the Transportation Forum to encourage ridesharing.

Best Friends is a safe haven for approximately 1,600 homeless animals. At the Sanctuary, animals are loved and given what they need to live their best lives until they find their forever homes.  For some, it is a place of recovering and healing and for others it is their home between homes.  Best Friends is the largest no-kill animal sanctuary in the United States and is the home base for Best Friends Animal Society.

This Advanced Alumni Weekend will begin with dinner on Thursday, April 22nd, 2020, followed by an evening orientation and safety guidelines process session. Lodging will be provided at the local Red Hills Best Western Hotel with options for single and double occupancy rooms.

Three volunteer shifts will be scheduled at the Sanctuary, one each day for Friday, Saturday, and Sunday (4/23 – 4/25/21). Participants will work together as a group in several of our animal care areas and the tasks will depend on the needs of the Sanctuary. Some project examples are deep cleaning in the animal care areas, assisting with socialization, trail maintenance, landscaping, weeding,  or painting. 

Participants will have an opportunity for a moderate-level hike in or nearby to Bryce Canyon on Saturday afternoon (approximately 1 ½ hour drive from Kanab).

Process groups will be conducted on Friday and Saturday evening, after dinner.

The schedule will include flexibility for participants who want to leave after lunch on Sunday (2 pm), or the OPTION for an additional moderate-level hike in or nearby to Zion National Park on Sunday afternoon (approximately 45 – 60 minute drive from Kanab).

This Alumni Service Project/Hiking Program will officially end at 5:30 p.m. on Sunday, 4/25/21. Participants can add an optional additional night at the hotel for $75 and leave on Monday if they choose. There are many other things to do and see in the area.

About Weekends of Recovery

Completion of a Level 1 Weekend of Recovery (WOR) is a prerequisite for Alumni to attend this AlumniWOR.

This Alumni event retreat is longer than the Level 1 WOR, with the program beginning at 6 pm Thursday evening and concluding at 2:00 pm on Sunday with the option to stay for an afternoon hike at Zion ending at 5:30. Check-in/registration at hotel will be 3:30 – 5:00 p.m. on Thursday.

Additional lodging for Sunday evening is available for registrants.

Registration Information

We are expecting high interest in this event. There is a maximum of 14 – 18 total slots available for this weekend.  After we reach our capacity number of registrations, we will collect a waiting list.

The basic registration fee of $1150 for a shared double room or $1400 for a single room includes 3 nights lodging (Thursday through Saturday), meals from Thursday dinner thru Sunday lunch, and all program fees.

All cancellations made before 30 days prior to event date will allow refund minus $50 non-refundable deposit; no refunds will be issued during final 30 days prior to event date.
