Peitao Zhu, PHD

Peitao is an Assistant Professor of Counseling at Northern Illinois University. He is a National Certified Counselor and License Professional Counselor in the state of Illinois. He received his Ph.D. in Counseling and Counselor Education from Syracuse University and M.A. in Mental Health Counseling and Behavioral Medicine from Boston University School of Medicine. Peitao adopts an interpersonal and existential lens in his works with individual and groups and has experiences with integrated behavioral health, college counseling, and rape crisis counseling setting.

Peitao also engages in research and teaching around complex trauma, group work, and cultural issues in counseling. He has published numerous articles in peer-reviewed, competitive, journals and delivered over 20 presentations in national and international conferences. He is on the editorial board of multiple top counseling journals, such as the Journal of Counseling & Development, Counselor Education & Supervision, and Journal for Specialists in Group Work.

Outside work, Peitao is an award-winning amateur classical pianist and avid singer. He is a native of Shanghai, China.
